Current Artist Statement

I use contemporary abstract art to explore the juxtapositional dance between our third dimensional subsistence and higher states of transcendental consciousness. I work with earthen, textured plasters to represent the natural world, synthetic materials such as epoxy resin to symbolize the challenges of navigating the man-made systems in our worldly lives and celestial products like gold leaf and metallic paint to reflect the role of our spiritual existence. I invite the viewer to feel for themself what it means to find balance and harmony amidst an ever changing physical, yet sacred reality; thereby bridging heaven and earth.

My art is defined by a wide array of mediums, techniques and layers. My primary medium is Venetian plaster, which is comprised of lime and marble, the type of plaster that was used to create old world fresco paintings. Each art piece contains 3 or more layers of plaster. It takes 24 hours for each layer to dry and unlike fresco painting, I don't paint into the wet plaster, but wait until it dries and use acrylic glazes to stain the plaster in order to maintain the earthen look and feel. This technique can be called "Fresco Fusion". This unique use of Venetian plasters give it an organic, heavily textured, three-dimensional effect that symbolize the timeless sediment of the natural world and are contrasted against areas in which I use epoxy resin, which is clear, glossy and synthetic.These contrasts illustrate the 3rd dimensional realities of life, where the natural world interfaces with artificial and man-made elements. A spiritual breakthrough occurs with the introduction of windows and celestial materials that represent the mystical and transcendental potential waiting to be released into kinetic energy. Creating heavy textures and a variety of layers in the art echos the multitude of layers of thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and spiritual experiences I undergo while creating these works. By creating windows that make my inner process available to the viewer, I hope to inspire their personal and spiritual growth.

Using larger wooden canvases, my audience is drawn into a sizable abstract landscape that compels them to linger in the intrigue of the present moment. This acts as a mirror, a reminder, and a call to attention, beckoning individuals to re-connect with mindfulness, their inner process, their spirit, the natural world and the interconnectedness of all of life. Serving as a type of Rorschach ink blot, it presents the viewer with recognition of different perspectives within themselves and how those perspectives are projected onto the outer world. My abstract artwork offers the viewer the opportunity to get in touch with their feelings, deeply evaluate their internal mechanisms and discover how they relate to and affect the outer world, thereby, acknowledging the impact that our thoughts, feelings and actions have on reality. By becoming more conscious of our own internal processes, we can heal our personal inner landscape and thus, improve our interactions with all of life.

My purpose in life and in creating art is to awaken a spark of curiosity that uncovers understanding of the deeper messages of existence and assist myself and the audience in achieving our highest potential, so as to contribute positively and co-exist peacefully with all of life. Our inner journey can be difficult and elusive to understand and navigate at times. My goal is to bring illumination to the darkness, revealing insights and helping us grasp new revelations about ourselves and the world around us. My creative works convey messages related to wholeness, showing how bringing the psychic fragments of mind, emotion and spirit together creates harmony and balance to our inner world. The allegory  of the Philosopher’s Stone is a prevalent theme throughout my work, representing the internal alchemical metamorphosis and transformation of refining our dense, lower nature into divine illumination and higher understanding.Through my creativity, I aspire to help myself and others understand and make peace with the inner and outer challenges of everyday, mundane reality so as to transcend into a more spiritual and mystical comprehension of ourselves.
